BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference has announced the 2016 Football All-Conference awards, as voted on by the league's coaches, and Delta State University placed three Statesmen on the squad. Junior running back
Chris Robinson was named to the First Team, while junior left tackle
George Roberts and junior linebacker
Landry Tullo earned Second Team selections. A complete list of the honorees is below.
North Alabama's Jacob Tucker was named the GSC Offensive Player of the Year, while West Georgia's Dylan Donahue was named the GSC Defensive Player of the Year. Valdosta State's Cedric Hollingshed won the honor of GSC Offensive Freshman of the Year, while West Florida's Trent Archie was named the top freshman on the defensive side of the ball. Bobby Wallace, head coach of the 2016 GSC Champions from North Alabama, won GSC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.
Robinson, a Bude, Miss., native, led all of NCAA DII in scoring with 24 touchdowns, 144 points and 14.4 points per game at the end of the regular season. The 5-foot-8 speedster topped the GSC in rushing, carrying the ball 186 times for 976 yards, averaging 97.6 yards per game, and 19 touchdowns. The dual-threat back also caught 37 passes for 551 yards and five scores, while tallying 1,544 all-purpose yards. He tied the DSU and GSC records for touchdowns in a game with six versus West Florida (five rush/one receiving) and he set a new DSU and GSC mark for touchdowns in a season with 24. Robinson eclipsed 100 all-purpose yards in eight of 10 games and scored at least two touchdowns in seven. He was named GSC Offensive Player of the Week three times.
Roberts, a 6-foot-7 junior from Lilburn, Ga., started all 10 games at left tackle for the Statesmen, leading the team in knockdown and pancake blocks. The Trinity Valley CC transfer graded 90 percent on all blocking assignments during the year, while playing a total of 724 snaps.
Tullo, a native of Hoover, Ala., earns his first career All-GSC honor after playing in all 10 games and making eight starts for the Statesmen. The 6-foot-1 middle linebacker recorded 68 tackles with 9.0 tackles-for-loss and 2.0 sacks this season. He also picked-off one pass and forced a fumble. Tullo turned in a season-high 11 tackles versus Mississippi College, while recording 10 tackles at West Alabama and against No. 20 Florida Tech. After missing all of 2015 due to injury, he made eight tackles with 3.0 tackles-for-loss versus Shorter in his second start of the year.
