DSU places five on GSC Fall All Academic team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Five Delta State University student athletes were named to the 2011 Fall All-Academic Team as released on Tuesday.
 
To qualify for the team, each athlete must be carry a 3.2 or better grade point average, and be a significant contributor of his or her team.
 
“We are very proud of all that these student athletes have accomplished not only in competition, but most importantly, the classroom,” said DSU Director of Athletics Jeremy McClain.
 
Sophomore education major Stacy Hagenson represented the Lady Statesmen cross country team. The Poplarville, Miss., native finished the fall semester with a 3.81 grade point average. Hagenson was also named first team All-Gulf South Conference after a stellar sophomore campaign in which she finished third in the Gulf South Conference Championships.
 
Statesmen football was represented by quarterback Micah Davis and tight end Reed Falkner. Davis finished with a 4.0 g.p.a. after graduating in December 2010 with a degree in chemistry, and was named the GSC Offensive Player of the Year. The Wesson, Miss., native also finished third in the Harlon Hill Trophy voting, which is awarded to the best player in Division II football.
 
Falkner finished with a 3.89 g.p.a. in Biology following the 2011 season, in which he caught three passes for 45 yards and was one of the best blockers for DSU.
 
Junior goalkeeper Flavio Romero was named to the team after he finished with a 3.91 g.p.a. in aviation management. Romero finished second in the league with 70 saves, and led the league with 5.0 saves per contest. Senior Joel Salazar rounded out the team, as he finished with a 3.9 g.p.a. in international business.
 
The midfielder led DSU with six goals during his senior campaign.
 
The GSC's sports information directors and faculty athletics representatives voted on the team.
