Lady Statesmen have their six game winning streak snapped after split with CBU

MEMPHIS, TENN-The Delta State University softball team kept their momentum of a five game winning streak for one game of a two game doubleheader on Saturday, as they split with the Christian Brothers Lady Buccaneers.

The Lady Statesmen (19-14, 7-7) took game one easily, 6-1, before being shutout 2-0 in game two. 

In game one, DSU rode the arm of pitcher Edie Oliver. The senior did not allow a hit until the fourth inning.

The Lady Statesmen scratched the scoreboard first in the third inning. Crista Richard drove in Taylor Hughes for the first run of the contest.

DSU added four more runs in the sixth inning, to take a 5-0 lead. A pair of the runs came when senior Chelsea Carr slapped a two run double to right center field. Carr now has a career high 15 RBI's.

CBU (13-15, 5-7) scored their lone run in the bottom half of the fifth.

The Lady Statesmen recorded seven hits in the contest, while Oliver held the Lady Bucs to only five.

Oliver went the distance, and won her third straight game, moving her record to 8-9. The Eupora native struck out eight CBU hitters, and walked only one.

Kaylea Brewer 5-7 took the loss for CBU.

Game two was a completely different story for Christian Brothers.

The Lady Bucs used freshman pitcher Michelle McEachron for 4.2 innings. The Carlsbad, Calif., native held the Lady Statesmen to only a pair of hits in the contest.

CBU scored first in the bottom of the first. Kathleen Nelson walked to lead off the inning, and would later score on a Casey King base hit.

The Bucs scored the second run of the game in the fourth inning on Nelson's RBI double.

Oliver and Hughes had the only hits of the game for DSU. Hughes hit her fourth double of the season in the fifth inning.

Kate Moreland (4-4) took the tough loss for the Lady Statesmen. Moreland went four innings and allowed two runs on six hits with three walks. Brittany Gonzales allowed one hit in two innings with two strikeouts.

McMahon (6-6) got the win for CBU. She struck out five and walked three. Brewer earned the seven out save for the Bucs. She did not allow a hit.

The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Sunday at noon to finish off the four game set with CBU.
