Swinging Statesmen finish fifth at Doyle Wallace Classic

Seth McBrayer
CLEVELAND -
Bolstered by the play of Seth McBrayer and Chase Smith, the Delta State University men's golf team claimed fifth place in the Doyle Wallace Classic, hosted by Henderson State University at the Hot Springs Golf and Country Club.  The Statesmen fired a 614, finishing eight strokes off the lead of tournament champion Arkansas Tech University (606).

"The guys really played well this week," Statesmen head coach Sam Dunning said.  "We had a strong qualifying round last week and I think they guys carried that over into this week's play."

Seth McBrayer, a 5-foot-7 junior from Charleston, led the way for the Statesmen.  In two rounds, McBrayer posted a 151 to finish tied for 7th overall.  In round one, the big-hitting McBrayer carded a 74 and followed that performance with a 77 on Tuesday.

Chase Smith, a 6-foot-3 junior from Vicksburg, also finished in the top 10 after posting back-to-back scores of 76 for a 152.

Austin Smithers finished 25th with a 157 (84-73) after shaving 11 strokes off his first round score.

Jordan Breaux finished with 159 (81-78) to claim 30th overall and Casey Patterson rounded out the scoring for the Statesmen with a 39th place finish - carding a 162 (79-83).

The Statesmen return to action March 14-16 at the Kinderlou Classic.  The three-day event is hosted by Valdosta State University at the Kinderlou Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga.
