Georgia College won the Matlock Collegiate Classic by one stroke over host Florida Southern College. Georgia College overcame a 12-stroke deficit after the first round, and an 8-stroke deficit after the second, the largest since 1998 when North Florida erased one of 17 after one round and 10 after two rounds to overtake Augusta State. It proved to be the second largest comeback in the tournament's 29-year history.
The Delta State Statesmen would finish 13th in the 16 team field, as they shot a final round total of 309, finishing the three day event with a team total of 916.
Chase Smith led the way for DSU. The junior finished with a three round total of 224 for a tie for 24th place. He was followed by
Seth McBrayer (230),
Austin Smithers (233),
Jordan Breaux (236) and
Collin McCrary rounded out the scoring for the Statesmen with a three round total of 239.
This was also the closest Matlock Tournament since 2003, when Tulsa beat UNC-Wilmington by one stroke and Miami (OH) by two. It's the sixth time in the last nine years the individual title was decided by one stroke.
The Statesmen will return to action on Feb. 23 as they travel to Hot Springs, Ark., for the HSU Invitational.
