CLEVELAND - The Delta State University women’s soccer team completed the most successful spring season in their short history, finishing 8-1-2 in three tournament appearances and winning two of them.

The Lady Statesmen traveled to Itawamba Community College in Fulton and took care of business right away in the ICC tournament, going 3-0-1 en route to the championship defeating Union University 4-2. They defeated Meridian Community College in the first round, 6-0, tied Union 2-2 and won a close game over the University of Alabama club team 3-2 to reach the finals.

DSU traveled to Scooba to take part in the third annual East Mississippi Invitational and were able to shut down opposing teams in dominating style, finishing with a 5-0-1 record with five straight shut-outs capping off another tournament win.

“This success is due to their hard work during the spring and I am very pleased with the way they played as a team,” head coach Jim Allen stated. “These young ladies put in a lot of time and effort on there physical conditioning and it paid great dividends for them. This group of ladies is the hardest working group I have had the privilege to coach since being at Delta State University. I really look forward to the upcoming fall season”.

DELTA STATE SOCCER ADDS THREE SIGNEES TO 2008 CLASS - By Daniel Hawthorne, Soccer Contact

CLEVELAND – Delta State University head soccer coach Jim Allen announced the signing of three players for the 2008 season on the first day of the national signing period for men’s and women’s soccer.

“I am very pleased to have these three student-athletes join our program. Each brings to the team a winning attitude and a goal to succeed in the classroom,” Allen said.

Jason White, a 5-foot-10 midfield/defender, became the first Statesmen to sign on Wednesday. White earned All-State honors while playing at Northeast Lauderdale High School in Meridian. He played club soccer with the Mississippi Fire of Jackson.

“Jason is extremely hard working and we have nothing but high expectations for him next season”.

Casey Reihardt and Toni Chavez became the first two signees for the Lady Statesmen. Reihardt, a defensive product of Oakville Senior High School and the prestigious J.B. Marine Soccer Club of St. Louis, Mo., hopes to be an impact player according to Allen. “We lost the Libby twins due to graduation, but she has the skills needed to replace some of that in the backfield”.

Chavez, a 5-foot-7 defender from Texarkana, Ark., has a bright future for the Lady Statesmen. Honing her skills for Arkansas High School and Texarkana Futbol Club, Chavez looks to be another impact player in the Lady Statesmen defense next fall.

DELTA STATE’S BRIDGET DUKE NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-GSC; FIRST LADY STATESMEN TO CAPTURE HONOR

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Delta State University’s Bridget Duke, a sophomore midfielder for the Lady Statesmen soccer program, has been named to the Gulf South Conference’s First Team All-GSC squad, as released on Thursday.  Duke was a Second Team selection last year and the first Lady Statesmen to ever garner All-GSC honors.

“Bridget is clearly one of the top players in the GSC and she is very deserving of this honor,” said Jim Allen, DSU head coach.  “She does the little things so well and she is a tireless leader on and off the field.”

Duke, a 5-foot-4 sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., played and started in all 19 games for the Lady Statesmen this season with four goals, three assists and 11 points.  She finished second on the team in shots (54) and shots-on-goal (31).

STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN CLOSE 2007 SEASON WITH SWEEP OF ROBERT MORRIS COLLEGE
By Daniel Hawthorne, Soccer Contact

CLEVELAND- Nine seniors were honored Sunday in more ways than one, as the Delta State soccer teams claimed a sweep over Robert Morris College at Delta Field.

The Lady Statesmen (5-14) took the field first as they looked to end a three-game skid, coming out with a 6-1 victory in front of the largest crowd of the season. Angela Davidson picked up her first goal on the year, as her 25-yard free-kick sailed through hands of the opposing keeper for a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the game.

Keeley Miller tied things up before the half for the Eagles.

From then on, it was the seniors who took over goal-scoring duties. Kortney Harris notched her seventh goal of the year 69 minutes in to retake the lead, 2-1.

Allie Libby scored her first goal on the year five minutes later off a corner kick taken by Davidson. Cat Sanford, Delta State’s all-time leading goal-scorer, knocked home her tenth on the season, followed by Harris once again (8). Sanford made it 6-1 minutes later to seal the victory.

The Statesmen, fresh a 2-0 victory over Lyon College, shrugged off a sluggish start to close out the season with a comfortable 5-1 victory.

Florin Parisot, who has had a phenomenal freshman campaign, scored the first goal midway through the half to take the early 1-0 lead. Rodrigo Luczensky doubled the score eight minutes later for his ninth on the season and the first of two on the day.

John Roegge cut the lead in half for the Eagles just before the break to make it a close game at 2-1.

Sophomore David Horstmann, DSU's leading scorer, added two goals in a three minute stretch. The first came off a lengthy cross from the left sideline by Parisot, while his second would come off a mistake in the defense to make it a 4-1 game for his eleventh goal on the year.

Luczensky would put the nail in the coffin with just over 20 minutes remaining to seal the 5-1 win.

“I am so proud of these kids, especially these seniors who have given 150 percent at every game and practice this year,” head coach Jim Allen said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better class of players who were leaders on and off the field.”

As a gift to the program, the nine seniors; Kortney Harris, Allie and Angie Libby, Cat Sanford, Dan Burton, James Richards, Philip Pearson, Kevin Marchi and David Voravongsa donated a tree which was planted by the scoreboard.

The seniors and their families were honored during the games for the dedication to the program and Delta State University.

STATESMEN DOWN SCOTS 2-0
By Daniel Hawthorne

BATESVILLE, Ark- With a three-game losing streak raining down on their heads, the Statesmen were desperate to go out on the season on a high-note, and did just that Thursday night in a make-up game against Lyon College, winning comfortably 2-0.

The win snaps a three-game skid that ended their chances of a GSC tournament appearance for the first time in school history and leaves them 8-9-1 on the year, the best record to date in the program's young history.

The Statesmen took the lead just seven minutes into the contest as Rodrigo Luczensky, a transfer from Coffeeville, Kansas, was able to capitalize on poor defending by the Scots and score his sixth goal of the season.

Freshman Steven Axe continued to have a successful season as he notched his fifth goal of the season midway through the first half to give the Statesmen a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Statistically, Delta State dominated the Scots who were held to just two shots on goal to DSU’s eight.

The Statesmen will close out the 2007 season by honoring their seniors in the last game of the year at Delta Field against Robert Morris College. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. kickoff this Sunday.

DSU SOCCER FALLS TO MONTEVALLO IN GSC ACTION

CLEVELAND – The Delta State Soccer programs lost two tough games to the Falcons of the University of Montevallo at Delta Field this afternoon.

The Lady Statesmen lost 6-1 due to relentless play from all sides of the the Lady Falcons’ roster. Each of their six goals was netted by a different player, three in the first half and another three in the second. DSU was outshot on the afternoon 19 to nine.

The sole bright spot for the Lady Statesmen came in the 53 rd minute as a nice cross from Kortney Harris to Cat Sanford sailed past the arms of the Montevallo keeper.

The Statesmen kept it exciting for the entire match but came up short in the end, falling 1-0 in the second game. The physical play on both sides of the ball lead to a full deck of cards. Two statesmen, David Horstman and Phillip Pearson, received yellow cards; as did James Ward of Montevallo. Otavio Tramontina came up with two yellows in the 54 th minute and was ejected.

The lone goal in the men’s contest came in the 17 th minute as Jonathan Maloney scored off an assist from Adam Frazer. The Statesmen had their chances late but a stiff defense from the Falcons never allowed DSU to tie it up.

With the losses the women fall to 4-12 on the season (1-5 GSC) and the men drop to 7-7-1 (1-2-1 GSC). Both teams will look to bounce back on Sunday as they play host to the Argonauts of West Florida. Game times are set for 12:30 and 3:00 p.m.

STATESMEN AND LADY STATESMEN SWEEP AWAY LOUISIANA COLLEGE
By Daniel Hawthorne, Soccer Contact

PINEVILLE, La.- With four games remaining in the season, there is no sign of the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen packing up the gear for the winter just yet. Tuesday the Delta State men's and women's soccer teams claimed a sweep of Louisna College.

The Statesmen won their record seventh game on the season, 3-1, and now have some momentum heading into three crucial conference games. The Statesmen are 7-6-1 on the year and 1-1-1 in the GSC.

Despite being out-shot 18-10 in the game, Delta State was able to put away their chances early in the game. Junior transfer Rodrigo Luczensky had his best game on the season so far with a three-goal effort bringing his total to five on the year.

His first goal came 13 minutes into the game, followed by another with three minutes remaining in the first half. Junior keeper Trey Jones, making just his fourth start all season, made three valuble saves in the first to keep the Wildcats at bay.

Luczensky finished his hat-trick in fine style at the 77th minute mark to seal the victory.

Charles Walton disrupted the shut-out with two minutes remaining in the game. Jones finished with nine saves on the night.

The Lady Statesmen ended their three-game winless streak with a 4-0 shutout. They are now 4-11 on the season, 1-4 in GSC play.

Delta State finished with 24 shots on the night, holding the Wildcats to just one. Cat  Sanford opened the floodgates just 10 minutes into the game on a great assist by Kortney Harris. That would be the score at the half.

Sanford scored her team leading eighth goal just three minutes after the break. Melisa Webber, who has had her share of opportunities, scored her first goal of the season with eight minutes left to play. Harris put the nail in the coffin just minutes later to seal the win.

Allison Richardson and Kristin Linagen combined for the shutout. This was their first shutout win since September 13 against Crichton.

Both teams will return home this Friday to closeout a four game home stand beginning with Montevallo. The games are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.

OUACHITA BAPTIST SWEEPS DELTA STATE IN SOCCER DOUBLEHEADER 3-0

ARKADELPHIA, Ark- Delta State soccer took a painful loss Sunday afternoon as both teams were shutout 0-3 against Ouachita Baptist. The Lady Statesmen dropped their third straight loss and are now 3-11 on the season and 1-4 in GSC play. The Statesmen, who have been hot of late, fall to 6-6-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in GSC play

The Lady Statesmen were held to just six shots on the day, four on goal against Ouachita Baptist. OBU finished with 13 offensive chances, four on goal.

Ouachita took the lead after 20 minutes on Lauren Pierce's goal off a throw for a 1-0 lead. A minute later, a Lady Tiger was brought down in the penalty box which resulted in a caution for a Lady Statesmen and a penalty kick. Paige Ross quickly made it 2-0. The third goal would come just minutes before the halftime break. Sarah Reed’s well placed free-kick was able to get by the defensive wall and past Delta keeper Kristin Linegan.

The Statesmen have had a record setting season so far, and a win Sunday afternoon would have secured their spot in the GSC tournament for the first time in the program's young history. Sunday’s loss to the Tigers is their first in conference action which leaves the Statesmen needing a win in the next three games to secure a spot in the tournament come November.

The Statesmen had their chances in the first half and for the most part were going toe to toe, despite being out-shot 5-7.

Ross Evans got the ball rolling in the 25 minute mark off a free-kick which ended junior keeper Evan Griffins mark of 224 minutes without conceding a goal. Jake Maxwell made it 2-0 as he was able to connect off a corner kick inside the 18-yard box.

Three minutes into the second half, OBU made it 3-0 before Griffin was pulled for the game and replaced by Trey Jones.
Kevin Marchi and David Voravongza had the best chances for the Statesmen, both saved by Tiger keeper Kale Kammer.

Both teams will be on the road this Tuesday as they take on Louisiana College in a non-conference match-up. Games will kick-off roughly at 4 and 6 p.m.

STATESMEN CLAIM 1-0 GSC SHUTOUT AT HARDING; DSU ONE STEP CLOSER TO GSC POSTSEASON BERTH

SEARCY, Ark- The Delta State (6-5-1, 1-0-1 GSC) men's soccer team moved one step closer to a postseason berth in the GSC with a 1-0 victory at Harding University (3-9, 0-3 GSC) on Friday. The Statesmen have been on a roll as of late, winning six of their last eight games after starting the season 0-4.

The Statesmen were held to just five shots for the whole game with two coming in the first half. Both teams were looking for any advantage early in the first half, but it was Harding who would have the upper hand as far as scoring oppertunities would go. Delta State's junior keeper Evan Griffin stepped up and made four huge saves at point-blank range to keep Delta State in the game in the first half.

The only goal in the game would have to wait for late in the second half. Florian Pariost came on as a sub early in the first and again in the second and was able to score his third goal on the year, a blast off a cross from freshman Steven Axe.

The Statesmen were out-shot 19-5 on the day with Griffin making nine saves for his sixth win of the year. It was the third shutout of the year for the Memphis, Tenn. native.

LADY BISONS SLIDE PAST LADY STATESMEN 4-1

SEARCY, Ark. - The Lady Statesmen’s hopes of making their first GSC tournament appearance dimmed slightly on Friday, falling to Harding 4-1. The loss drops DSU to 3-10 on the year and 1-3 in GSC play. Harding improves to 6-7 and 1-2 in the GSC.

Scoring chances were hard to come by for Delta State as they were held to just four chances in the first half. The Lady Bison opened the gates just six minutes into the contest as Elyssa Currie knocked home her first goal on the year.

Minutes later Harding doubled their score as Lynsey Clissold scored the first of her two goals with an assist by Currie. The Lady Statesmen continued to have problems in their defense as Kendyl Washburn was able to steal the ball deep in DSU territory and make it 3-0 at the 20-minute mark. Delta State trailed 3-0 at the break.

As the second half kicked off, Harding picked up where they left as Clissold added her second on the night, a chip shot over keeper Kristin Linagen for a comfortable 4-0 lead.

Catherine Sanford scored her third goal in two games with 22 minutes remaining, but it was too- little, too-late.

For the game, the Lady Statesmen were held to seven shots, five on goal compared to Harding’s 25 attempts, 11 on goal. Linagen finished with seven goals in the loss.

Both squads will remain on the road, as DSU travels to Arkadelphia, Ark., Sunday to face Ouachita Baptist University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

HORSTMANN'S GOAL WITH 4:54 REMAINING LIFTS STATESMEN TO 1-0 WIN OVER CHOCTAWS
By Daniel Hawthorne, Soccer Contact

CLEVELAND- David Horstmann, a sophomore from Collierville, Tenn., has played lights-out soccer this season for the Statesmen and his goal in the 85th minute Tuesday lifted Delta State (5-5-1) to a 1-0 victory over the Choctaws of Mississippi College (6-2-1). The victory was the fifth in six games for the Statesmen and their third-straight at Delta Field.

A slow start for both teams to begin the game led to some exciting soccer midway through the first half, as both teams had point-blank shots on goal, only to be denied by two outstanding keepers.

A break in the monotony ended when MC defender Jesse Purvis shattered the post with 30 yard blast that left the crowd in awe and the Statesmen breathing easier as the ball sailed out of play.

The Statesmen had their chances, forcing the Choctaw keeper to make just three saves while recording seven shots in the half. The game stood at 0-0 at the half.

The second half was played at break-neck speed, as both teams picked up their intensity. Delta's Horstmann had two good chances, however both shots went wide of the net.

MC nearly scored off a corner-kick with a little help from Delta's Ricardo Callendar, as his clearance header nearly ended up in his own net.

With only five minutes remaining in the contest, the Statesmen went on the offensive. Horstmann's goal came off a counter attack led by Evan Griffin’s punt. In the mix, freshman Aaron Wilbanks had the ball and found Horstmann up the middle. The sophomore forward managed to squeeze through a few defenders and calmly placed the ball in the net.

Delta's Griffin finished with three saves on the day for his fifth win on the season, while MC's Andrew Bailey recorded three saves in the loss.

The Statesmen finished the game with 11 shots, four on goal, while allowing the Choctaws 10 shots.

Delta State returns to Gulf South Conference action on Thursday at Harding University. The Statesmen and Bisons will kickoff at 2:30 p.m. in Searcy, Ark.

Lady Lions cage Lady Statesmen 7-2

FLORENCE, Ala.- After delivering a fantastic come from behind victory over West Georgia, the Lady Statesmen didn’t have a lot to celebrate Sunday afternoon, as they were defeated by the paws of North Alabama, 7-2. Delta State fell to 3-9 on the year and 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play. The Lions improve 6-5 on the year and 1-2 in league play.
This was the third game in five days for the Lady Statesmen, and fatigue seemed to be play a factor in the loss. North Alabama took an early lead three minutes into the contest as Paige Hess netted her second goal of the year.

The Lions made it 2-0 at the 21st minute Tassia Augusto scored her first of two on the day. UNA would add one more four minutes later after starting keeper Kristin Linagen was pulled after the second goal. Delta State would trail 3-0 at the half.

Sophomore keeper Allison Richardson made her first appearance in the regular season and played well throughout the game. The Lions made it 4-0 off a goal by Elise Denton before Allison Post made it 5-0 just 14 minutes later.

Cat Sanford finally shed some light on the Lady Statesmen, scoring her first goal in four games to avoid the shutout a minute later.  She finished with two shots on goal.

Augusto would add her second on the day before Sanford netted her second in the game to cut the lead to five.

The win proved out of reach for the Lady Statesmen as Hess found the net for her second on the day.

Richardson finished with six saves on the afternoon as Delta State was held to just 10 shots compared to UNA's 24.

The Lady Statesmen will travel to Searcy, Ark., October 5 for a GSC match-up with Harding. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

LADY STATESMEN END SKID WITH 2-1 COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN OVER WEST GEORGIA
By Daniel Hawthorne, Soccer Contact

CLEVELAND- The Delta State (3-8, 1-1 GSC) women's soccer team picked up a crucial win Friday afternoon in front of 121 at Delta Field, defeating the University of West Georgia (5-6, 0-1 GSC) 2-1. It was the first Gulf South Conference win of the season for DSU. The win halts a four-game skid for coach Jim Allen's Lady Statesmen.

A slow first half saw some chances midway through for both teams. DSU's Kortney Harris had a chance to break the silence three times in the opening half, but failed to put the ball in the net. The half ended 0-0.

Mandy Nolan broke the silence for West Georgia 25 minutes into the second half. A point-blank shot by Sam Jones was saved by Kristin Linagen, but the rebound was quickly knocked in by Nolan.

Eight minutes later, Delta State's Megan Dixon tied things up with a 25-yard blast for her fourth goal on the season.

As the clock slowly ticked away, chances would be plentiful at both ends, keeping both goalkeepers active in their respective nets. A loose ball at midfield led to a breakaway for Harris, who poked it past the keeper and watched it slowly roll in off the post for the game winner.

Linagen picked up her third win on the year with four saves on the day. Sanford finished with four shots, but remains goal-less in her last four games.

The Lady Statesmen will travel to Florence, Alabama to take on North Alabama Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.

JACKSON- The longest unbeaten streak in Delta State men's soccer history came to an end Thursday, as the Statesmen were shutout in the second half in 2-1 loss to Belhaven College. The Statesmen fall to 4-5-1 on the season.

The streak ended a run of four straight victories in which the Statesmen outscored opponents 18-11.

Sergei Yepishin scored first for the Blazers midway through the first half off a pass from teammate David MacKay. As the half continued, both teams were unable to gain any positive control of the ball. Delta State was able to tie the game with five minutes remaining on a goal by freshman Aaron Wilbanks. It was his first of the year.

The Blazers would retake the lead early in the second off a goal by Brett Clifton. Belhaven was finally able to control the momentum of the game and keep the Statesmen at a safe distance to hold on to the win.

LADY BUCS BLANK LADY STATESMEN 0-4

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- For only the fourth time all season the Delta State women's soccer team was shut out, losing a heartbreaker 4-0 to Christian Brothers University on Wednesday in the GSC opener for both schools. The loss drops the Lady Statesmen 2-8 on the year and 0-1 in GSC play, while CBU improves to 6-2 and 1-0 in league play.

STATESMEN AND BUCCANEERS PLAY TO A 3-3 TIE

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-  Steven Axe once again proved to be a life-saver for the Delta State (4-4-1, 0-0-1 Gulf South Conference) men’s soccer team, as his goal in the 71st minute sent the game into overtime against Christian Brothers (6-2-1, 0-0-1 GSC) Tuesday in front of 250 Buccaneer fans at Signiago Field.

Unfortunately, the game ended in a 3-3 tie to start GSC play for both teams. The tie halts DSU’s win streak at four games; however, the Statesmen extended their unbeaten streak to a school-record five games.

As the match began, both sides would trade blows early as defense seemed to be at a premium.  The Bucs would pounce first on a shot by Ryan Heine, his second of the season, just 16 minutes into play.

The celebrations would be short lived as a foul by CBU in the penalty box resulted in a Statesmen penalty kick which Kevin Marchi calmly put away to tie the game at 1-1 before the break.

Just 20 minutes into the second half, David Horstmann gave Delta State the lead on his sixth goal of the season with an assist form Marchi. It was the fifth goal in four games for Horstmann, who has emerged as a major goal scoring threat for the Statesmen.

The lead for the Statesmen quickly turned to dust as the Bucs were able to pull some magic out of their boots and score two goals in less than five minutes. Matt Werakso would tie it up at 2-2 on a penalty kick before knocking home his sixth goal of the season to take the lead, 3-2.

Axe’s blast to the back of the net in the clutch was able to keep the streak alive and tie the game at 3-3.

Both teams failed to take advantage of opportunities in both overtimes.

Junior keeper Evan Griffin continued to shine for the Statesmen with 10 saves.  CBU’s David Foster also recorded five saves.

The Statesmen will travel to Jackson Thursday to take on Belhaven College. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

STATESMEN CLAIM SCHOOL-RECORD FOURTH-STRAIGHT VICTORY AT FAULKNER; LADY STATESMEN FALL IN OVERTIME
By Daniel Hawthorne, Soccer Contact

MONTGOMERY, Ala.- A breakaway goal in the 82nd minute by Statesmen forward Steven Axe sealed the win for Delta State as they held on to a 2-1 victory over Faulkner University Saturday evening. The win extends their school-record win streak to four games and moves the squad to 4-4 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 1-7-2.

Both teams got off to a slow start spending most of the half trying to gain the advantage. Although the Statesmen had their chances in the first half, eight shots total, none were on goal. Keeper Evan Griffin continued his great play with two saves in the first to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

As the cool weather swept in, both teams were anxious to score first. It wasn’t until the 72nd minute that David Horstmann was able to find the back of the net with a 25-yard scorcher that left Jeffery Preston with no chance to save it.

The lead was short lived, as a deep cross found the head of Faulkner midfielder Tyler Umstead into the back of the goal to tie it up at 1-1. Shortly after, Robbie Barron received his second yellow card of the game and left the Eagles down 10 men for the remainder of the game.

With the Eagles down a man, the Statesmen were able to capitalize thanks to Axe’s fourth goal on the year. Griffin finished with four saves on the day for his fourth straight victory between the pipes.

In ladies action, the Lady Statesmen were able to gain an early lead in game one of the series, however DSU was unable to finish several second-half opportunities as they dropped their second straight contest 3-2 in overtime to Faulkner University. Delta State fell to 2-7 on the year.

The Lady Statesmen completely dominated the first half statistics and for the second time all season, was able to score first. Sophomore Bridget Duke found the net 25 minutes into the half after a handful of chances went awry.

No. 2 Lynn shuts down Statesmen 0-3

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- Down 1-0 with less than 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Delta State men's soccer team tried their best to claw back into the game. However, their effort fell short, as No. 2 Lynn claimed a 0-3 victory over the Statesmen. DSU dropped to 0-3 on the year, while Lynn climbed to 4-0.

“I’m very proud of our guys tonight”, head coach Jim Allen said. “We had our chances to tie to the game; Axe had a great opportunity and the goalkeeper was just able to make the save. We played well in the second half, but we just couldn’t capitalize on anything.”

A scoreless first half left the door wide open for either team to get on the board first. Lynn took the first bite. A yellow card against the Statesmen on a corner kick which led to a penalty shot and the first goal of the night, three minutes into the second half. Lee Porter beat Trey Jones to give the Knights the early lead.

The Statesmen would play the next forty minutes as if their lives depended on it, pressuring the Knights defense and keeping the ball in their half of the field. A Statesmen turnover in midfield led to the second goal of the night for Lynn, as Nano Short’s 18 yard blast found the back of the net.

The Knights were not done, adding one more about two minutes later. Gabe Taboada’s initial shot was saved by keeper Jones, however Keishen Bean was there to knock it in the open net.

Rockhurst claims sweep over Delta State in Kansas City
By Daniel Hawthorne, Soccer Contact

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Rockhurst University proved to be a tough cookie to crack on Sunday, as RU claimed a sweep over Delta State. The Lady Statesmen (0-2) dropped a hard fought contest 2-5, while the Statesmen (0-2) were shutout 0-3.

Fatigue looked to play a factor in the game as the Lady Statesmen found themselves down 1-0 just two minutes into the contest on a five-yard shot by RU's Lindsey Miller.

Danielle Boyce and Samantha Lester made it 3-0 Rockhurst before the halftime break. The Lady Statesmen did have their chances on offense, tallying four shots on goal, but all were saved by Rockhurst keeper Sara Ratzki.

Delta State continued to push for their first goal of the season, but had to wait until the 61st minute. Meanwhile, the Hawks would score two goals in two minutes, Miller would add her second before Liza Schwarz made it 5-0.

Despite the score, Delta State was determined to keep fighting as senior forward Catherine Sanford would knock home the first goal of the season; a cross by Bridget Duke inside the 18 yard box was slotted home to make it a 1-5 game. Sanford wasn’t done yet, as she set up the next goal, giving it off to senior Kortney Harris for a 12-yard shot.

Delta State tallied seven shots on goal to the Hawks 13. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Prevost made eight saves on the afternoon.

Sanford led the squad with one goal and an assist.

The Lady Statesmen will return to Cleveland Friday for the home opener against Division I Grambling State University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

In the men's game, Statesmen goalkeeper Trey Jones did all he could do to keep Delta State in the contest with Rockhurst. Despite his 10 saves, the Statesmen fell 0-3 to RU.

The Hawks managed 22 shots during the game, 14 of which were on goal. The Statesmen were held to two, one on target.

Rockhurst grabbed the lead 33 minutes into the contest as Tom Heinemann connected on a header from 8-yards out. The Statesmen defense did all they could as Jones would make four saves in the half, keeping the score at 1-0.

Down by a goal, the Statesmen still had a chance, however the Hawks would not let off the gas. A free kick from outside the 18 yard box by Haggai Leboo made it 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining. Heinemann would add his second goal, another header off a corner with five remaining to seal the win.

Phillip Pearson and Steven Axe had the only shots for the Statesmen on the day.

The Statesmen will travel to Huntsville, Alabama next Thursday to take on Lynn University. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.

LADY STATESMEN BATTLE DELTA DEVILETTES TO 2-2 DRAW IN PRESEASON EXHIBITION

CLEVELAND - The Lady Statesmen ended their preseason on a high note battling NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State University to a 2-2 draw Sunday at Delta Field. Shannon Brown showed off her goal scoring ability with a low shot that crept underneath the Valley keeper 24 minutes into the game giving the Lady Statesmen a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Statesmen carried that lead into the second half before Cat Sanford made it 2-0 as she broke away from her marker and slammed a shot past the outstretched leg of the Delta Devilettes keeper.

Despite being out-shot 14-8, the Lady Statesmen managed to keep Valley at bay until the remaining for minutes of the game. MVSU’s Sonia Curvelo made it 2-1 as her shot floated over the arms of Lady Statesmen keeper Allison Richardson’s outstretched arms with just four minutes remaining. That wasn’t enough of the Devilettes as Nicole Karsay quickly tied it at 2-2 on a loose ball that slid behind the Lady Statesmen defense.

“The girls shouldn’t be too disappointed with the outcome today,” said Keree Koeppel, Lady Statesmen coach and DSU assistant. “Yes, it’s not a win, but we played very well as a team and I can see very good things coming from this game.”

GREENS SLAM WHITES 10-0 IN FOURTH ANNUAL GREEN-AND-WHITE GAME

CLEVELAND - The fourth annual Green and White game took place in front of over 100 fans Sunday, as the Statesmen capped preseason fall camp in preparation for the 2007 season opener August 24 at Missouri Southern.

The Green squad showed off their offensive abilities early, as David Horstmann and Steven Axe scored the game’s first two goals in the opening five minutes of play. At the break, the Greens held an insurmountable 4-0 lead with goals by Ricardo Calendar and Horstmann (2).

The Green defense looked strong from the start, leaving keeper Trey Jones with little to do but direct his defenders. The solid defensive play held the White squad to a mere two first half shots.

As the second half kicked off, All-GSC keeper Evan Griffin came in to replace Jones, and like Jones directed a near-perfect second half. Meanwhile, the offense exploded for six goals to make the final score a lopsided 10-0.

“I thought both squads played extremely well and gave a lot of heart out there today,” head coach Jim Allen said. “The starters really stepped up their defensive play and were able to execute the things we worked on during the preseason. The white team needed to work on a few things, but there was obviously some improvement.”

The Statesmen start their season August 24, as Delta State travels to Joplin, Mo., to face Missouri Southern State.

Statesmen and Lady Statesmen gearing up for start of season; DSU to host MVSU Sunday

CLEVELAND - With the preseason schedule in the books, and the hot Delta sun heating things up, the Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen soccer programs have a lot of confidence in this year’s squad and are looking forward to kicking things off next week with a trip to Missouri.

With 11 returning players from last year’s team, the Statesmen have a solid nucleus looking to improve upon last season’s finish.  Joining All-GSC selection Evan Griffin and three-year letterman Phillip Pearson are a number of standouts, including Steven Axe and Stephen Hummel, which will fortify a much improved offense.

“Axe is an extremely talented player.  I think he has a great opportunity to fight for a starting position. He looks as if he’s been playing college soccer for 10 years, he’s just that type of player that we are lucky to have,” Constable said.  “Hummel is very gifted and exciting to watch.  I’m looking forward to see what kind of season he will have”.

All preseason, the Statesmen have been concentrating on defense as a unit. Constable feels that if the Statesmen can work together defensively and keep the goals to a minimum, then the offense will be able to take over and get the ball in the back of the net.

With a lot of news faces fighting for a starting spot, this year’s Statesmen are looking to improve on a season that turned a few heads in the Gulf South Conference.

The Statesmen will play in a Green and White game Sunday afternoon at Delta Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.

On the Lady Statesmen front, assistant coach Keree Koeppel is entering her fist full season at the reigns of the Lady Statesmen program.  Despite the shortened preseason, the ladies are excited about the upcoming season.

“I can’t wait to get started,” said Koeppel. “It’s been a great preseason despite a lot a few injuries to some key players that forced us to make some changes. Offensively, we are going to score a lot of goals, but if we are able to stay healthy I think we have a shot this season.”

Koeppel will have to rely on a number of freshmen to fill in the holes left last season by graduation. Freshman keeper Sarah Prevost is having a great preseason.  “The girls seem to be confident with her back there, and that’s the kind of player we need directing our defense,” added Koeppel.

The Lady Statesmen look to improve upon a defense that helped the squad to the best finish in program history last season.

The Lady Statesmen host an exhibition with Mississippi Valley State University Sunday at 5 p.m. at Delta Field.

STATESMEN FALL 2-1 TO MAJORS

CLEVELAND - Delta State down to 10 men on the field and 1-0 on the scoreboard, Peter Xiong’s free-kick into the box with less than a minute remaining was knocked home by Kevin Marchi to send the game into over time. Millsaps quickly burst the celebrations, scoring the game winner with two minutes left in the first overtime for the 2-1 victory.

The loss extends the Statesmen losing streak to six games and drops DSU to 5-11-1 on the year. The Majors earn their second win on the season, improving to 2-11-0.

With a tie ball game heading into the half, both teams needed to catch a break to take control of the game. CHOCTAWS DOWN STATESMEN 4-1 IN JACKSON

CLINTON- Delta State's inability to find the back of the net when it matters most has seen the Statesmen fall under .500, as they dropped their second straight match, 4-1 to Mississippi College Tuesday. The loss puts the Statesmen at 5-7-1 on the year, and 1-1 in GSC action. Division III powerhouse MC improved to 8-2-1 on the season.

Both teams looked equally matched to start the game, but MC took the lead quickly off a corner kick set up by Drew Ziegler knocked home by Phillip Applewhite 22 minutes into the game. Forward Chris Penton doubled their lead minutes later. His initial shot was stopped by Statesmen keeper Evan Griffin, but Penton headed in the rebound for a 2-0 lead going into the break.

The heat and humidity around the field looked to be having an affect on the Statesmen as Mississippi College added a third goal just three minutes after the break. The Choctaws made it a 4-0 game with less than 20 minutes remaining. The goal came after a disputed offside call left the Statesmen defense in some confusion, leaving Phillip Buffington all alone in front of goal.

Lee Williamson added some delight for the Statesmen bench with a goal late in the game set up by Mike Smith.

Griffin finished with six saves in the loss.

The loss drops Delta State to 4-9 on the year and 1-3 in GSC play, while the Lady Tigers improve to 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in GSC action.

With only two goals in their last three games, offense was the Lady Statesmen’s number one priority. However just 13 minutes into the contest, OBU got on the board first thanks to a corner kick set up Rachel Folk that was knocked in by Lauren Pierce. OBU controlled most of the half, with very little chances coming the way of Delta State.

Confusion in the box led to the second goal for Ouachita. Folk’s cross into the box was knocked home by the Lady Statesmen for a 2-0 score at the break.

Ouachita came out strong after the break, out shooting DSU 8-5 in the second half. Sam Selby stepped up her game, despite allowing the lone goal, keeping the ball out of the net with seven saves in the loss.

The Lady Statesmen travel to Montevallo, Ala., to take on the Lady Falcons of the University of Montevallo in GSC action on October 6. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

The Statesmen improve to 5-5-1 on the year and 1-0 in GSC action, while the Bisons drop to a league worst 0-9 and 0-3 in GSC action.

The Statesmen stormed out the gate early off a corner-kick set up by Peter Xiong, right onto the head of Murphy. The Statesmen continued to dominate in the half with a little help from sophomore keeper Evan Griffin who kept the game close with some solid saves.

The second half was a different story, as the Bisons came out with an all out offensive attack for 20 minutes. Griffin and company kept their cool keeping the scoreboard blank for the visiting side.

The Statesmen will host Ouachita Baptist University Sunday afternoon at University Field. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.

STATESMEN AND BLAZERS BATTLE TO 2-2 DOUBLE OVERTIME TIE

CLEVELAND- 110 minutes of heart, pain and sweat wasn’t enough for the Delta State men’s soccer team to claim their fifth win on the season, as they were held to a 2-2 tie against Belhaven College Wednesday at University Field. The Statesmen sit at 4-5-1 on the year, while the Blazers are 4-4-1.

The Statesmen came into the contest well rested, having not played since a 2-1 win over Rhodes College 10 days ago. Coach Allen and the Statesmen hoped to take advantage of that rest and in the early going it looked like the plan would work. Freshman Lee Williamson led the charge just two minutes into the contest with a 25-yard blast that whizzed by the Blazers keeper for a 1-0 DSU lead.

The Blazers tied the game at 1-1, as Paul Babba slid behind the defense and crossed the ball in front of the goal onto the foot of Brett Clifton for the tie. Minutes later, Babba would set up the second goal, this time a blast from Dantala Wright for a 2-1 Blazer lead going into the break.

The Statesmen picked up the intensity early in the second half. David Hortsman made it a 2-2 game thanks to newcomer Kevin Marchi’s assist. Both teams had their chances to regain the lead as the game headed to overtime.

Sophomore Evan Griffin made two important saves late in the second overtime to keep the score at 2-2. Griffin finished with seven saves on the night.

The Statesmen will host Harding University Friday for their Gulf South Conference opener. Delta State is looking for redemption after losing to the Bison in overtime 4-3 last season. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at University Field.

LADY STATESMEN CAPTURE HISTORIC VICTORY WITH 1-0 WIN OVER NORTH ALABAMA

CLEVELAND- Victory never tasted sweeter for the Delta State women’s soccer team! In a season already filled with ups and downs, the Lady Statesmen finally have one monkey off their back thanks to a 1-0 victory over conference rival North Alabama. Sunday’s win not only snaps a five game losing skid, but it also makes history as the first Gulf South Conference victory since the program’s inception in 2004. The Lady Statesmen move to 4-7 on the year and 1-1 in GSC play, while the Lady Lions and are 3-3 and 0-2 GSC.

With cloudy skies overhead, Delta State was desperate for its first victory in five games, especially in front of their home fans where they are 3-1. UNA looked to be the team to score first, pressuring the Delta State defense from all corners. However, Delta State changed their defensive strategy midway through the first half, forcing UNA to shoot from distance. UNA led 8-2 in shots on goal in the first half.

They say playing at home gives you extra intensity and Sunday the fans took that expression to a whole new level. With 12 minutes remaining in the half, standout Bridget Duke set up Kortney Harris on a break-away goal for her second score of the season. Harris’ initial shot slammed off the post, but she reacted quickly and beat out the chasing UNA keeper for the score.

The Lady Lions looked to tie the game early in the second half with two free-kicks from 25 yards out, but they were equally matched by DSU keeper Sam Selby.

Duke had a chance to seal the win late in the game, but her point-blank shot was defended well in an amazing effort by the Lady Lions keeper.

Selby started her second game of the year and finished with seven saves.

The win is not only the first in GSC action, but it also sets a new record for wins in a season with four.

The Lady Statesmen continue GSC action on September 29 as they play host to Harding University. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

UWG overpowers Delta State in GSC Opener

Carrollton, Ga. - They say that big-time players step up in big-time situations. You might be able to say that about UWG junior Alex Udin after Friday's 3-0 win over Delta State. The junior had two goals to lead the Wolves to victory at Observatory Field.

The timing of Udin's offensive explosion couldn't have come at a better time. Last Sunday, facing a huge region contest with North Alabama, Udin had two goals. Today, after a tough outing and nail-biting win over Shorter on Wednesday, Udin struck again for two goals, pushing her season total to five.

The first goal came just eight minutes into the game. Udin had just missed on a free-kick just seconds earlier, and lined up for another free-kick. The ball didn't get more than 13 feet off the ground as it screamed over the hands of DSU keeper Samantha Selby and into the back of the net.

The next goal came in the 26th minute and welcomed Brittany Carr back into the fray. The sophomore has been injured for several weeks, but doesn't look like it anymore. After a shot from Delta State, UWG keeper Jenny Ross got the ball up to Rachel Doody, 3/4 of the field away from the goal. Doody kicked the ball ahead of the pack and Carr made every other player on the field looks as if they were standing still. She caught up to it just outside the 18-yard line, took a couple of touches and fired the ball past Selby for a 2-0 Wolves' advantage.

The score remained that way for the next 50 minutes before Udin struck again, this time from 20 yards out to close out the scoring.

Carr's goal gives her three on the season and 13 in her career at West Georgia. Udin now has 17 career goals and five this year. Ross and Patricia Logsdon combined for the shutout in net.

The Lady Statesmen will host their GSC home opener on Sunday versus the Lady Lions of the University of North Alabama. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at University Field.

STATESMEN EDGE RHODES 2-1; LADY STATESMEN FALL BY SAME SCORE

MEMPHIS- On a cloudy Sunday afternoon in Memphis, the wet and miserable conditions weren’t enough to stop the Delta State men's soccer team from snapping a two game skid, winning 2-1 against Rhodes College. The Statesmen moved to 4-5 on the year.

With only a day's rest between games, the Statesmen were looking to get their first win in over a week against a Rhodes team who has had a hard time finding the net this season.

Delta State looked to take advantage of Rhodes’ lack of offensive pressure, only to go into the break tied 0-0.

Mike Smith would add his fifth goal of the year on a header off the foot of Peter Xiong. Smith’s goal broke a 230 minute drought that began with his winner against Spring Hill.

Rhodes would even the score minutes later on a shot by Mike Williams. It was their first goal in three games.

With less than 15 minutes left in the game, midfielder Lee Williamson sealed the win capping off a breakaway opportunity with his second goal in the green and white.

DSU keeper Evan Griffin finished the game with seven saves in the win and a school-record and career-high fourth win in this season.

The Statesmen play host to Belhaven College September 27 in Cleveland. Kickoff is set for 4.pm.

The Lady Statesmen got down and dirty despite the terrible playing conditions, however a late goal in the second half wasn’t enough to break a three game skid, falling to Rhodes College 2-1 Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Lady Statesmen to 3-6 on the season.

Delta State was forced to change their style of play early due to the wet field conditions, making it difficult to make good passes on the ground.

Rhodes capitalized and took the lead thanks to some unlucky defending inside the penalty area that allowed the Lady Lynx the easy score and a 1-0 lead at the break.

Rhodes took a 2-0 advantage midway though the second half, a shot from 20 yards out slipped through the outstretched hands of DSU keeper Allison Richardson.

Bridget Duke cut the lead in half with a goal of her own. Kortney Harris sent in a good pass through the defense; Duke’s initial shot was saved, however her quick reaction banged the deflected shot off the back of the net. It was her her seventh goal on the year.

The Lady Statesmen travel to Carrollton, Ga., September 22 to take on West Georgia. It will be the Gulf South Conference opener for the Lady Statesmen. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

LADY STATESMEN FALL 4-2 TO LADY CRUSADERS
