STATESMEN FINISH SEVENTH AT GSC CHAMPIONSHIPS; AWAIT NCAA REGIONAL DECISION By J.T. Webb, Golf Contact HOT SPRINGS, ARK.- The Delta State University Statesmen golf team rallied Tuesday to finish in seventh place after starting the day in ninth at the 2008 Blue Cross Blue Shield/ Gulf South Conference Men’s Golf Championships at the Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, AR. West Florida won their third straight GSC Championship shooting a 54-hole total 856 for an amazing -8 under par. Argo golfer Tobias Rosendahl won the individual championship with a blazing -7 under par 212. Brandon Hartzell, pictured at left, led the Statesmen all week long. The Sioux Falls, SD native posted a huge -1 under par (71) on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 21 st place. Hartzell opened play today at 10-over par and finished with a 9-over 225 for the tournament. Lee Rhodus continued his solid play at the tournament carding a final round 75 to finish with a three round score of 226 to tie for 23 rd. Seth McBrayer shot a third round 2-over 74 to finish the tournament with a score of 233. He finished in 41 st place. All-GSC Second Team member Chase Smith tied for 42 nd place after shooting a three round total of 234. Smith was followed by Grant McDonnieal who rounded out the scoring with a solid final round of 1-over 73 for a 54-hole total 234. DSU’s final round of 293 was 15 shots better than their opening round 308. The third round 293 was also tied for the fourth best team total of the day. The Statesmen await word from the NCAA regarding regional play. April 21, 2008 GSC CHAMPIONSHIPS UNDERWAY WITH STATESMEN IN NINTH Hot Springs, AR- The Delta State University Statesmen Golf team currently sits in ninth place after 36 holes of the 2008 Blue Cross Blue Shield/ Gulf South Conference Men’s Golf Championships at the Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, AR. The Statesmen are led by Lee Rhodus, who sits in 24th place after posting (75-76) a seven over par. Rhodus was followed by Brandon Hartzell who shot (79-75) for 10-over. All-GSC Second Team member Chase Smith is tied for 45th place after shooting a two round total of 158. Smith is followed by Seth McBrayer (159), and Grant McDonnieal (161). DSU’s finished day one with a team total of 617, which is four shots away from Christian Brothers 613 for eighth place. Two-time champion West Florida leads after day one. The Argo’s shot an amazing -2 under par for a team total of 574. UWF leads second place North Alabama by nine strokes after shooting a team total of 583. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday.
DELTA STATE FRESHMAN CHASE SMITH NAMED TO ALL-GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE TEAM BIRMINGHAM , ALA. – As the Delta State golf team prepares for the 2008 Gulf South Conference Golf Championships, Statesmen golfer Chase Smith was named to the Gulf South Conference's All-GSC Second Team on Friday. The freshman from St. Aloysius in Vicksburg has placed in the top 10 in five tournaments this year including a second place finish at the Doyle Wallace Invitational after shooting a 145 (71-74). Smith will lead the Statesmen into Hot Springs, Ark., for the Gulf South Conference Golf Championships starting on April 20. The two-day affair will be played at the Hot Springs Golf and Country Club. April 18, 2008 GSC CHAMPIONSHIPS SET FOR HOT SPRINGS, ARK. BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - As has become the norm, some of the country’s top men’s teams will tee off at the Hot Springs Country Club. Two-time defending GSC Champion West Florida leads the way, entering the Tournament as the nation’s No. 1 team for the second straight season. UWF is ranked No. 1 in the GCAA Top 25, GolfStat/NCAA Head-to-Head Standings and the NCAA South Region Top 10. The Argonauts return to Arkansas after winning their eighth overall Conference Crown a year ago by finishing -5 (859) in the 54-hole tournament. The top challengers to West Florida’s attempt at a three-peat are Valdosta State, North Alabama and Henderson State. VSU is No. 4 in the region, No. 8 in the GolfStat Standings and No. 7 in the GCAA Top, while UNA is No. 8, No. 17 and No. 18 in the respective polls. HSU is No. 9 in the region, No. 237in GolfStat and received one vote in the last GCAA poll. Seven other squads also enter the post-season in the GolfStat Standings: Delta State (No. 40), Arkansas Tech (No. 41), West Georgia (No. 55), Ouachita Baptist (No. 79), Montevallo (No. 112), Harding (No. 109) and Christian Brothers (No. 135). Also competing are Arkansas-Monticello and Southern Arkansas.
April 2, 2008 UNA WINS SPRING CLASSIC; DSU FINISHES THIRD MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama had golfers finish first, second and fourth overall to lead the Lions to a 25-stroke victory in the 2008 UNA Spring Classic at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals Fighting Joe Course. Delta State had one of its best finishes this year, as the Statesmen finished third overall. UNA had rounds of 291 and 293 for a 584 total. Southwestern Oklahoma State was second at 609, followed by Delta State (611), Arkansas Tech (615), Henderson State (617), Lincoln (627), West Georgia (628), Ouachita Baptist (628), Drury (640), Faulkner (640), Montevallo (652), William Carey (654), Harding (662), Christian Brothers (672) and Northwest Shoals (700). North Alabama's Brett Munson took Medalist honors with a 142 total and was followed by teammate Daniel Creel at 144. Lincoln's Rodolfo Gamino was third at 147 and UNA's David Gies was fourth at 148. Also on the all-tournament team were Chase Smith of Delta State (149), B.J. Hawkins of Arkansas Tech (149), Lourens Kleynhans of Henderson State (149) and Austin Smithers of Delta State (149). Top 10 Players School Scores March 31, 2008 LIONS HOLD TWELVE-STROKE LEAD AT SPRING CLASSIC MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. -- With several strong individual performances, the University of North Alabama golf team rolled to a 12-stroke lead after one round of the UNA Spring Classic at the Robert Trent Jones of the Shoals Fighting Joe Course. Delta State currently sits in fourth place with a 310. Delta State’s Chase Smith is just three strokes off the lead, as the freshman sits in fourth headed into Tuesday’s second round. March 19, 2008 DELTA STATE MEN’S GOLF FINISHES 15 TH AT VALDOSTA STATE COLLEGIATE CLASSIC CLEVELAND – The Delta State University men’s golf team wrapped up play Monday at the Valdosta State University Collegiate Classic with a three-round total of 940 to finish in fifteenth place overall. The three-round event was held at the Kinderlou Golf Club in Valdosta. Florida Southern College took home the team title by one stroke over the University of West Georgia 878-879. Florida Southern's Judson Eustaquio defeated VSU's Brent Witcher and Georgia College's Niclas Johansson in a two hole playoff for the individual title. All three players parred the first hole while Witcher and Johansson birdiedthe second hole. Eustaquio eagled the second hole, his third eagle to go along with 17 pars on the day. Chase Smith’s 233 (83-72-78) paced the Statesmen for the event. The freshman finished tied for 47 th overall. Brandon Hartzell’s 234 (77-80-77) finished second overall for DSU and 54 th overall. Senior Lee Rhodus finished 63 rd overall with a 237 (80-76-81). Grant McDonnieal (84-82-75) and Trent Adams (82-80-80) rounded out the scoring for DSU with a 241 and 242 respectively. The Statesmen return to action on March 31-April 1 at the North Alabama Lion Invitational in Florence, Ala. March 18, 2008 STATESMEN IN 15TH PLACE AT VSU COLLEGIATE CLASSIC VALDOSTA-Ga, The Statesmen golf team wrapped up second round play on Tuesday at the Collegiate Classic at Kinderlou Golf Club in Valdosta, GA. The Statesmen are currently in 15th place with a team total of 630. After shooting a disappointing 322 in round one, round two saw a 14 shot improvement for a 308. Freshman Chase Smith continues his steady play with a two day total of 155. After carding an opening round 83, Smith became familiar with the course firing an even par 72. Smith is the team leader in 44th place at 11 over par. Statesmen Lee Rhodus and Brandon Hartzell, are one and two shots back respectively of Smith’s team lead with 156 and 157 two day totals. Trent Adams and Grant McDonnieal round out the scoring for DSU after shooting two day totals of 162 and 166. Florida Southern has continued their excellent play, and currently find themselves in the lead. After a two day total of 580 FSC find themselves with an 11 stroke lead over second place Georgia College and State University. GCSU’s Niclas Johansson is in 1st place with a four under par 140. The final round of play at Kinderlou will continue on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
February 27, 2008 STATESMEN FINISH FIFTH AT HSU DOYLE WALLACE INVITATIONAL; CHASE SMITH CLAIMS SECOND HOT SPRINGS, ARK. - The Delta State men's golf team closed out the Doyle Wallace Invitational hosted by Henderson State in fifth place on Tuesday. The Statesmen shot a two-round 625 (305-320) in cold and blustery conditions. Freshman Chase Smith turned in one of the best individual performances of the year, finishing second overall. Tournament host HSU claimed the team title with a 601. "The weather played a major factor in everyone's performance today," said Sam Dunning, Delta State head coach. "I was very proud of the poise Chase showed today and I believe his performance this week is just the tip of the iceberg." After carding a first round 305, the Statesmen tallied a 320 on Tuesday while battling winds in excess of 30 mph and temperatures in the upper 30's. Smith, a freshman from Vicksburg, continued his hot play with a 74 on Tuesday. Monday, the St. Aloysius graduate turned in a 71 for a share of the lead. His two-round 145 was three strokes off tournament Medalist Jack Bartlett's 142. Delta State senior Lee Rhodus closed out the tournament with a 158 (78-80) to finished tied for twenty-first. Brandon Hartzell finished the event in twenty-eighth place with a 160 (76-84), while Austin Smithers (162/80-82) and Robbie Morrice (171/87-84) rounded out Delta State's scorers. Henderson State (601/296-305) had to rally from two strokes down on Tuesday to claim the team title by four strokes over Northeastern State (605/294/311). February 26, 2008 CHASE SMITH TIED FOR LEAD, AS STATESMEN SIT IN FIFTH PLACE AT HSU'S DOYLE WALLACE INVITATIONAL HOT SPRINGS, ARK. - Chase Smith, a freshman from Vicksburg, powered his way to a first round 71 on Monday at the Doyle Wallace Invitational hosted by Henderson State University. Smith's 71 was good enough for a share of the lead, while his Delta State teammates sit in fifth place heading into Tuesday's final round. "Chase had a great opening round. Hopefully, we can build off his performance on Tuesday," said Sam Dunning, DSU head coach. Northeastern State (294) holds a two stroke lead over host Henderson State (296). Arkansas Tech (299) is third followed by Paris (Texas) Community College (300) and DSU (305) in the top five. Delta State's Brandon Hartzell sits fourteenth after a first round 76. Fellow teammate Lee Rhodus is twenty-third with a 78 followed by Austin Smithers (80) and Robbie Morrice (87). Final round play begins Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark. February 12, 2008 STATESMEN FINISH FOURTEENTH AT MATLOCK COLLEGIATE CLASSIC IN LAKELAND, FLA. LAKELAND, Fla. – The Delta State University golf team wrapped up play Tuesday afternoon at the Matlock Collegiate Classic in Lakeland, Fla. Host team Florida Southern College won the event for the third time in the last four years. FSC finished with a three-day team total of 870, four strokes better than West Florida in second place. Delta State finished in fourteenth place with a three day total of 924. The Statesmen were led by Brandon Hartzell, who finished with a 12-over par 228. Hartzell finished in 36th place. Lee Rhodus and Chase Smith both finished the tournament with a total of 232, while Trent Adams and Austin Smithers closed shooting 233 and 242 respectively. West Florida’s Matthew Galloway took medalist honors for the second straight year shooting a six under par 210. The Statesmen are back in action on February 25-26 at the Henderson State University Reddie Classic. The two day tournament will be played at the Hot Springs Country Club in Hot Springs, Ark. DESTIN, Fla. -- Columbus State posted a 293 Sunday in the only round of a rain-shortened Indian Bayou Classic to take the tournament title with a two-stroke lead over Arkansas Tech. Host North Alabama was tied for fourth with Delta State at 301. Lander was third at 296 in the 17-team field. Patrick Wilson of Lander was the medalist with a three-under-par 69. Also on the all-tournament team were Brett Munson of North Alabama (70), Ryan Hitt of Arkansas Tech (70),Will Wilcox of Clayton State (71), Hunter Harper of Columbus State (71), Jack Bartlett of Henderson State (71), Harrod Moulds of Meridian Community College (71) and Daniel Guthrie of West Georgia (71). October 6, 2007 NORTH ALABAMA CLAIMS TEAM TITLE AT DERRALL FOREMAN CLASSIC; STATESMEN FINISH SECOND CLEVELAND - Play concluded this afternoon in the 2007 Derrall Forman Invitational at the Cleveland Country Club, as the Lions of North Alabama took the tournament championship. The team came in four under par, shooting a combined 572 over the two days. Jack Bartlett, of Henderson State, took the individual championship with a combined score of 134, a full ten-strokes under par. Delta State’s White team finished strong leaping into the second spot with a combined 582 on the tournament. Brandon Hartzell led the way for the Statesmen with a 144 individual mark for par. Chase Smith, Trent Adams, and Grant McDonnieal were close behind at 145, 146, 147 respectively. Henderson State (584), Arkansas Tech (585), and Lindenwood University (591) rounded out the top five finishers. Top five places in the individual table were as follows: 1. Jack Bartlett, HSU (134); 2.Wes Smith, UNA (138); 3. Nelson Alvarez, West GA (141), Brett Munson, UNA (141); 5. October 5, 2007 FIRST ROUND IN THE BOOKS AT DERRALL FOREMAN COLLEGIATE CLASSIC; HENDERSON STATE HOLDS FOUR-STROKE LEAD CLEVELAND – Despite high winds and extremely fast greens, Henderson State University blistered the Cleveland Country Club course for a team 284 to lead the Derrall Foreman Collegiate Classic hosted by Delta State University by four-strokes headed into Saturday’s final round. North Alabama’s Purple team came in even on the day, shooting a collective 288. Delta State’s white team finished with a 294 to place third, while defending champion Lindenwood College and Arkansas Tech sit in a fourth place tie, each turning in a 296. “The course played very fast today,” said DSU head coach Sam Dunning. “All the teams compensated pretty well for the wind and I think it might remain a factor tomorrow.” The Rams of the University of Mobile recorded a 297 to sit in sixth place followed by the University of West Georgia with a 298 in seventh. The rest of the field goes into tomorrow in the following order: Harding University (303), Montevallo (305), Ouachita Baptist (306), North Alabama-Gold (306), Lindenwood-Gold (309), Delta State-Green (313), Lambuth University (315), Hinds CC (318), Mississippi College (324), Delta State-Fighting Okra (329), and Milsaps College (338). Jack Bartlett of Henderson State led the field shooting an impressive 64, eight-under-par, on the day. Brandon Hartzell and Trent Adams led the way for the Statesmen each posting a 71 for one-under-par. The action resumes tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. for the second round of the 2007 Derrall Forman Invitational. October 4, 2007 Statesmen look to improve following finish at AFLAC/CSU Invitational Midland, Ga. – The Delta State University golf team competed in their second tournament of the year this past Monday and Tuesday, as they competed in the Aflac/Cougar Invitational hosted by Columbus State University. DSU finished tied for 15th shaving eight strokes off of their first round score to finish with a three-day total of 918 (311-303-304). Brandon Hartzell led the way for the Statesmen shooting a three day 228, (78-76-74). He improved his score by two strokes each round. Lee Rhodus, Trent Adams, Chase Smith, and Grant McDonnieal rounded out the field shooting; 230, 231, 234, and 243 respectively. Nova Southeastern University (869) won the team title by three strokes over the Univ. of West Florida (872). South Carolina-Aiken (873), Valdosta State Univ. (876) and Barry University (886) rounded out the top five. The Statesmen will host one of the premier tournaments in Division II golf on Oct. 5-6, as 18 teams are scheduled to compete in the Derrall Foreman Classic.
October 2, 2007 STATESMEN GOLF TEAM SET TO HOST ANNUAL DERRALL FOREMAN COLLEGIATE CLASSIC CLEVELAND – Collegiate golf teams from across the country will descend upon the Cleveland Country Club golf course this Friday and Saturday for the annual Derrall Foreman Collegiate Golf Classic hosted by Delta State University. This year’s event will feature over 18 teams representing some of the top programs in NCAA Division II. “The Derrall Foreman grows a little each year and this year’s tournament field is better than ever,” said DSU head coach Sam Dunning. “We have schools from all over the map participating this weekend and we’re excited about getting started this Friday.” The two-day, 36-hole tournament begins Friday morning at the Cleveland Country Club course and concludes with the final round on Saturday. Trophies will be presented to the team champion and individual medalist at the conclusion of the tournament. Lindenwood University returns to defend its title from a year ago. Last year, Lindenwood claimed the team title by 11 strokes over Arkansas Tech University. Delta State finished fourth. B.J. September 19, 2007 STATESMEN FINISH EIGHTH AT CAMERON UNIVERSITY'S TERRITORY CLASSIC DUNCAN, Okla. - The Statesmen golf team opened the 2007-08 schedule with an eighth place finish in the Territory Classic hosted by Cameron University. Delta State shaved eight strokes off their first round total to finish with a 596 (302-294). The 294 was the sixth lowest score of the day. "It's a solid start," said DSU head coach Sam Dunning. "Chase Smith played great for us and I believe we have some good things to build upon." Smith fired a two-day total 147 (74-73) to finish tied for 17th. Brandon Hartzell (74-77) and Austin Smithers (80-71) turned in identical 151's to finish tied for 36th. "Austin tore it up today with a 71," said Dunning. "He played so much better in the second round." Grant McDonnieal (76-76) and Lee Rhodus (78-74) also tied with a 152 to finish 44th. Texas Wesleyan (572) claimed the team title by 14 strokes over Abilene Christian (586). St. Mary's (587) was third followed by Central Oklahoma (589) and Southwest Oklahoma (590) in the top five. DUNCAN, Okla. - Coach Sam Dunning's Delta State golf team sits in eighth place after the first round of The Territory Classic hosted by Cameron University at The Territory Golf Club. The Statesmen shot a first round 302 and trail the tournament leader Texas Wesleyan by 14 strokes headed into Tuesday's final round. "We got off to a fast start yesterday, but we couldn't keep our momentum up down the back nine," said Dunning. "Chase Smith and Brandon Hartzell both played very well and I believe they can pick it up Tuesday." Smith and Hartzell are both tied currently in 16th place after first round 74s. Both short identical rounds of 34-40. Grant McDonnieal is in 34th place after an opening round 76 (35-41). Lee Rhodus fired a 78 (40-38) to place 52nd, while Austin Smithers rounded out the scoring with a first round 80 (42-38). Texas Wesleyan tallied a first round 288 to lead the 15 team field. The tournament will conclude Tuesday afternoon. |
