WACO, TEXAS- Despite not playing a game during the opening weekend of competition, the Delta State University football team climbed two spots to No. 22 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll as released on Monday.
Week one saw one huge contest in the opening weekend of Division II games, as No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth defeated then No. 5 Central Washington. As a result, Minnesota Duluth climbed to No. 3 in the latest poll.
Northwest Missouri State remained in the top spot, as they received 23-of-26 possible first place votes. Grand Valley State, Minnesota-Duluth, North Alabama and California (Pa.) round out the top five.
Fellow Gulf South Conference member West Alabama climbed to No. 10 in the latest poll, while Valdosta State received 31 votes.
The No. 22 Statesmen will open their season on Sat. Sept. 4, as they travel to Jackson to take on the Jackson State Tigers.
The Statesmen Sports Network will begin coverage at 3 p.m. for the 4 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
