GAME NOTES: No. 24 Statesmen open season at Jackson State

WEEKLY FOOTBALL RELEASE: DELTA STATE @ JACKSON STATE (SEPT. 4)

CLEVELAND -
Kickoff for the 2010 season is here and the No. 24 Statesmen of Delta State University will officially open the campaign Saturday, Sept. 4 at Jackson State University.  Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Mississippi Veterans' Memorial Stadium.  The game will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting at 3 p.m.

The game marks the second meeting all-time between the Statesmen and Tigers. DSU defeated JSU, 27-15, in the 2007 season opener. DSU out-gained JSU 265-122 in total offense during the contest.

INSIDE THIS WEEK'S EDITION:
• The Statesmen welcome two new coordinators this season. Greg Stevens (Eastern Oregon/'95) takes over the offense, while former DSU All-GSC safety Pete Golding (Delta State/'05) returns to coordinate the defense.

• Delta State enters the season ranked the nation's top 25 (AFCA No. 24/D2Football.com No. 21) for a seventh consecutive season.

• Senior running back Trevar Deed (Phoenix, Ariz.) returns for his final season with the green-and-white. The two-time All-American and 2009 CellularSouth Conerly Award Finalist has accounted for 3,722 all-purpose yards and 30 touchdowns in just two seasons with DSU. He was named a Preseason All-American this year by Lindy's Football Almanac, The Sporting News and D2Football.com.
 
• The Statesmen finished the first decade of the new millennium with the 12th best winning percentage in all of Division II football. Delta State amassed an impressive 84-33 record during the ten year span for a .718 winning percentage. The 84 victories are tied with Gulf South Conference rival North Alabama for 11th best.

• For the first time in three seasons, Delta State will feature a new starter at quarterback. Redshirt junior Micah Davis, who is the son of former Statesmen quarterback and current Copiah-Lincoln Community College head coach Glenn Davis and the grandson of former DSU Hall of Famer Woodsen Earl Davis. The 6-foot-2 Wesson native threw for 1,990 yards and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore at Copiah-Lincoln. He was redshirted last year.

• No stranger to TV, the Statesmen will appear on a regional or national broadcast four times in 2010, including the NCAA Division II National Game of the Week versus Arkansas Tech on Thursday, Sept. 9 on CBS College Sports. DSU will also appear on GSC-TV Live three times during the regular season. In all four games, Delta State Football has the opportunity to appear in 107 million homes this season.

• Delta State will compete for the title of “Transfer U” in 2010, welcoming 10 NCAA Division I transfers. The Statesmen feature transfers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Maryland, Kansas State, Houston, Iowa State, Colorado State, Akron, Stephen F. Austin, and Youngstown State.

• The Statesmen will dedicate the 2010 season to former head coach and director of athletics Horace L. McCool, who passed away this past summer. McCool holds the distinction of being Delta State's all-time winningest football coach, boasting a 76-48-3 record in 13 seasons.
