CLEVELAND – Delta State University and the City of Cleveland will once again serve as the hosts for the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships set for Wednesday, Feb. 10 through Saturday, Feb. 13 at the DSU Aquatics Center. The four day event features six of the nation's top NCAA Division II programs, including defending men's and women's national champions Drury University.
Both defending NSISC champions are back and looking to repeat, as Truman State headlines the women's meet and Missouri S&T will lead the men. The remainder of the field includes Drury, Ouachita Baptist, Henderson State and Delta State.
DSU's
Wolfgang Mairinger, 2009's NSISC Most Outstanding Swimmer, also returns looking to capture the honor again.
“The NSISC Championships is a nationally prominent meet that really prepares the participants for the NCAA Championships in March,” said Brian Hein, Statesmen and Lady Statesmen head coach. “The quality of the league is unmatched and the level of competition is second to none. To win the NSISC title, you have to be producing at a national championship level.”
It's no surprise that it takes that level of performance to win the NSISCs. Seven of the last 11 men's NCAA Division II national champions and 13-straight women's national champions have come from the teams competing in this event.
Drury University and Truman State have won every women's national title since 1997, with the Lady Panthers winning four straight from 1997-2000 and the Lady Bulldogs claiming six straight from 2001-2006. Both teams have alternated the women's title over the past three seasons with DU taking home the title in 2009.
The men's side is not much different, as Drury has won seven of the last 11 national crowns, including five straight titles.
“There's no doubt the talent level here this week will be through the roof,” added Hein. “It's just exciting thinking about the times that will be recorded here again this year.”
The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen, 10-time NSISC champions, enter the NSISC meet ranked in the nation's top 10, according to the latest CollegeSwimming.com Polls.
“Our goals are the same every year and that is to compete for national championships,” said Hein.
The stretch drive toward those hopes and aspirations begins this week at the NSISC Championships.
