JACKSON – The Delta State men’s and women’s soccer teams both fell to Belhaven in narrow, hard-fought games Wednesday, with each squad losing by scores of 1-0.

The Statesmen fell to 2-4-1 and the Lady Statesmen dropped to 2-3 after their respective games against their NAIA hosts.

In the men’s game, Belhaven’s Sergei Yepishin deposited home a rebound off a shot by teammate John Kehoe in the 37th minute. It was Flavio Romero ’s only blemish, as the freshman goalkeeper for Delta State made nine saves.

The ball stayed on the Statesmen’s side of the field for large portions of the game, as Belhaven managed 27 shots to Delta State’s 10.

The Statesmen managed to put six shots on goal. Will Fisher had a chance to tie the match in the final minute, but was denied by Belhaven keeper Zach Wallace.

In the women’s match, Nicole Trawick put the hosts on top in the 31st minute, which proved to be the winner as the Lady Statesmen were unable to notch an equalizer. Freshman forward Jackie Kelly recorded Delta State’s only shot on goal, while freshman keeper Samantha Le Jeune made five saves.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen return to action Saturday when they travel to Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. Opening kickoff of the women’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
