DUNCAN, Okla. - After carding a 308 to open The Territory Classic, hosted by Cameron University, on Monday, the Delta State University Statesmen golf team rebounded with a 305 Tuesday to finish the two-day event in 12th place overall with a 613 in the first tournament of the 2009-2010 season.

Dallas Baptist University won the team title after a one hole playoff with St. Edward's University. DBU carded a 291-287 to finish with a 578, while SEU posted a 290-288. Abilene Christian (295-284) was one stroke back at 579 in third followed by Southwest University (596) in fourth and Newman University (598) and Midwestern State (598) tied for fifth.

Alex Carpenter of Abilene Christian won the individual title with a 140 (74-66).

The Statesmen were led by
Chase Smith, a junior from Vicksburg, who shot a two-day 151 to finish tied for 35th place. Smith opened the tournament in seventh place after carding a 72, but found playing conditions tough on Tuesday with a +7, 79.

Austin Smithers, a junior from Hattiesburg, finished 48th overall with a 153 (80-73), while Seth McBrayer, a junior from Charleston, was 51st with a 154 after recording identical rounds of 77.

Senior Jordan Breaux, a native of Sulphur, La., came in 53rd with a 155 (79-76), while sophomore Casey Patterson, a West Helena, Ark. native, rounded out the scoring for the Statesmen in 86th place with a 167 (85-82).

The Statesmen return to their home course, the Cleveland Country Club, on Oct. 2-3 for the annual Derrall Foreman Intercollegiate Classic. The two-day event kicks off on Friday and ends Saturday. The Statesmen Insider and GoStatesmen.com will have complete coverage of the event.
