CLEVELAND – Cancer, in its many deadly forms, has touched us all in some way. In the Mississippi Delta, the dreaded disease is all too common, affecting Mississippi Deltans at a rate 20 percent higher than the national average, according to the American Cancer Society. With that in mind, Delta State Athletics, Statesmen Baseball, and Lady Statesmen Softball have once again teamed up to fight cancer in all its forms at Saturday’s “K’s for Cancer” event at Ferriss Field and University Field. Events will start at 10:50 a.m. at University Field and 1:55 p.m. at Ferriss Field.

“We feel it’s our obligation to be an active part of the community, and that includes promoting a healthy and active lifestyle and bringing about awareness for important health issues, including cancer,” stated Jeremy McClain, director of athletics. “For the past five years, our coaches, staff, and the 350-plus student-athletes representing this institution have participated in events like this one to bring hope, and a few dollars to the fight against cancer.”

This year, the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen have teamed with Marty Denton, a musician from Arkansas, for two special performances at this Saturday’s baseball game with Arkansas-Monticello and softball clash with Henderson State. Denton will be performing the National Anthem at both events, and a special performance of his song, “The Cure,” will take place between games. Cancer survivors and their families are encouraged to attend the events, and anyone wearing pink to either venue will receive free admission to the game.

Copies of Denton’s new release, “The Cure,” will be available for $10 with a portion of the proceeds being donated to cancer research. Donations will also be accepted at the gate with 100 percent going to the NCAA’s “K’s for Cancer” initiative.
