NCAA Tournament Notebook: Lady Statesmen South Region Game Notes
CLEVELAND - The Lady Statesmen (26-6, No. 1 seed) of Delta State University begin their quest for a fourth NCAA Division II National Championship this week at the NCAA DII South Region Tournament in Cleveland. For a second-straight year, DSU and the Lady Statesmen will serve as host. The regional tournament will begin Friday, March 13 and run through the championship game on Monday, March 16. All games will be played at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
Seven of the nation’s top programs will invade Cleveland on Thursday with one thought on their minds, winning a regional title and advancing to San Antonio, Texas for the 2009 NCAA DII Elite Eight. Last year, Delta State defeated Valdosta State, 62-44, on their home floor to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight, and coach Sandra Rushing and her squad are ready to do it again!
The Lady Statesmen enter the NCAA South Region Tournament on quite a roll after claiming their fourth-straight Gulf South Conference Championship on Sunday with a 53-51 overtime win over Arkansas-Monticello, who is seeded fifth at this week’s event. DSU also defeated Harding, 79-53, and Valdosta State, who as the No. 8 seed will get a rematch Friday night at 6 p.m. with the Lady Statesmen, along the way to the title.
