CLEVELAND – The Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University scored two goals within a six-minute span late in the first half and marched to a 3-0 victory over Delta State on Saturday at Delta Field.

Robert Mingo was credited with the game-winning goal as he able to poke a shot into the lower-right corner past a diving Flavio Romero (Cartagena, Columbia/Colegio Britanico de Cartagena) in the 37th minute.

Christian Brothers (4-5-1) notched its second win in four days over the Statesmen, who fell to 3-7-1. Saturday’s match, a makeup for a contest originally scheduled for Sept. 20, was a non-conference meeting between two Gulf South Conference squads.

The Statesmen had a couple of chances to break a scoreless tie shortly before the 30-minute mark, but shots from David Horstmann (Rossville, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and Angus Ferguson (Echuca, Victoria, Australia/Caulfield Grammar School) were stopped by CBU keeper Harrison Cheatham.

In the second half, a strong shot off the foot of Joshua Jokic (Brisbane, Australia/Canterbury College) from 25 yards was stopped by Cheatham in the 73rd minute.

Andrew Ballard and Zach Tubinis also scored for the Buccaneers.

The spirited and physical match saw 29 fouls and six yellow cards issued. Christian Brothers players were booked for four yellows in the match.

The Statesmen return to action Monday when they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face Faulkner University in a non-conference match. The contest, the second part of a women’s-men’s double-header, is scheduled for 5 p.m.
