ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen Swimming and Diving teams completed a dual meet sweep Friday night at the Duke Wells Center over host and fellow New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference member Henderson State. The Statesmen swam past the Red Wave 141-100, while the Lady Statesmen earned the win with a 135-101 total score.

"We've competed against some solid NCAA Division I competition already this season and I believe that helped us prepare to start our conference and Division II schedule," said DSU head coach Brian Hein. "Our teams were focused and they wanted to get the win today. It showed in the effort in the pool."

Delta State dominated the diving platforms on Friday, as Jennifer Gerasimos and Josh Bowman swept the 1-Meter and 3-meter events.

Roman Sereda, a senior All-American from St. Petersburg, Russia, claimed a pair of wins for the Statesmen with a 1:57.53 in the 200-Individual Medley and a 1:59.56 in the 200-Backstroke.

On the women's side, All-American Dawn Thomson continued her impressive start with a pair of victories in the 500-Free (5:23.46) and the 1000-Free (11:05.48).

Delta State also claimed sweeps in several events including the Men's 1000-Free, Men's 200-Breaststroke, Women's 200-Free, and Women's 500-Free.

In the Men's 1000-Free, Chris Ashton earned the win by over 10 seconds with a 10:11.89, while Tucker Marshburn (10:22.59) and Joey Morgan (10:25.93) took second and third.

Waldimir Juschin edged teammate David Struble in the 200-Breaststroke by less than a half-second, 2:16.77 to 2:17.07, to claim the victory. George Huber finished third with a 2:19.45.

On the women's side, Mary Katherine Waddell, a freshman from Florence, Ala., earned the win in the 200-Free with a 1:58.05. Elena English finished second with a 1:59.78 and Kaci Bolls took third with a 2:00.83.

In Thomson's 500-Free victory, freshman Kaci Bolls and senior Rebecca Glass swept the seond and third spots with a 5:26.10 and 5:28.69, respectively.

"This was a huge win for us today to open conference play," added Hein. "Dawn and Roman really got us going and Josh and Jenn's performance on the boards was clutch."

Delta State returns to the pool on Nov. 8 when the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen travel back to Arkadelphia, Ark., to face Ouachita Baptist University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
