DELTA STATE ’S STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES “TEAM UP TO READ”

CLEVELAND Delta State University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Hamilton-White Child Development Center announced a new program geared at raising reading awareness in the Delta, “Team Up to Read.” The program hopes to collect enough books to fully furnish Hamilton-White’s children’s library.

“We’re very excited about this event and what it will mean for the kids at Hamilton-White,” said Anthony Fizer, SAAC President and a senior men’s basketball player from Shaw. “ Reading at an early age is very important and we hope to be able to help bring awareness and books to the kids at the development center.”

SAAC members are encouraging fans to bring children’s books to Delta State’s game against Southern Arkansas on Thursday, Feb. 21. All books collected will be donated to the Hamilton-White Child Development Center. Anyone donating a book will be asked to come to center court between games for a special recognition.

For more on the SAAC or “Team Up to Read,” please contact Delta State Athletics at (662) 846-4300 or email us at athletics@deltastate.edu.

MAKE-A-WISH EVENT PLANNED FOR SATURDAY’S DELTA STATE BASKETBALL GAMES

CLEVELAND The Delta State University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be hosting several Wish Granting Volunteers and Wish Children during the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen basketball games Saturday, February 16, as they continue to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is an organization that assists the families of a child with a terminal illness. The foundation grants a wish that the child has, whether it is to meet a celebrity or go on an exciting vacation. The foundation has granted wishes to over 161,000 children worldwide since 1980.

The SAAC has been conducting a change-drive during Delta State basketball games in an effort to raise $1,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Fans are strongly encouraged to donate as there are just three home basketball games left this season.

“The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a wonderful cause,” said SAAC advisor Dana George. “There are so many children out there that need our help, and I encourage everyone to come make a child’s dream come true.”

STUDENT ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE RAISES OVER $1,000 FOR CHARITY

CLEVELAND Saturday night’s silent auction proved to be a worthwhile endeavor for members of Delta State University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, as the group netted over $1,000 for charity at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Proceeds from the event will go to the numerous charitable organizations that the SAAC works with yearly.

“We were tremendously excited about the turn out for the event Saturday,” said Dana George, SAAC sponsor. “Our members worked extremely hard to collect authentic Delta State apparel, many of which were autographed by our student-athletes. I want to thank the many community members and fans who so generously gave to our cause.”

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is a group comprised of two student-athletes from each of Delta State’s 13 intercollegiate sports. For more information on DSU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, please contact Dana George at (662) 846-4289 or email us at athletics@deltastate.edu.
